Quarter 4 Science Exam Study Guide

Quarter 4 Science Exam Study Guide

For the Quarter 4 Exam you will be tested on the information from Unit 7 and 8. You are responsible to know and understand all of the vocabulary in this study guide as well as the information from the textbook, the online lessons, and any activities or notes in your Science notebook.

Unit 7 Properties of Matter

Big Idea: The physical properties of matter can be used to identify it even if it has changed states of has been mixed with other matter.

Lesson 1 What Are Physical Properties of Matter?
*Vocabulary: matter, physical property, mass, volume, density
*Be able to explain how to calculate mass, volume, and density
*Explain what causes objects to sink or float
*Explain how physical properties can be used to identify matter
*Compare objects by their physical properites

Lesson 2 How Are Physical Properties Observed?
*Sort objects according to their physical properties
*Explain the physical properties of a group of objects
*Compare objects by their physical properties

Lesson 3 What Is Conservation of Mass?
*Vocabulary: Law of Conservation of Mass
*Be able to explain the Law of Conservation of Mass in your own words and give an example to demonstrate your understanding

Lesson 4 What Are the States of Water?

*Vocabulary: states of matter, solid, liquid, gas, change of state, condensation, evaporation
*Describe the three states of water.
*Explain how heating and cooling change the states of matter.
*Explain that matter isn’t lost or added when it changes state.
*Describe the different physical properties of solids, liquids, and gases
*Explain the different physical properties of water in its different states/*Compare and contrast water in its three states

Unit 8: Changes in Matter Study Guide

Big Idea: Matter can undergo both physical and chemical changes.

Lesson 1: What Are Some Physical Changes?

Vocabulary: physical change, mixture, solution, solvent, solute

*Recognize that during a physical change, the composition of a substance does not change.
*Identify examples of physical changes.
*Compare and contrast mixtures and solutions

Lesson 2: How Can We Make A Solution?

*Review online lesson

Lesson 3: What Are Some Chemical Changes?

Vocabulary:  chemical change, chemical property, chemical reaction

*Recognize that after a chemical change, new substances form with different characteristics.
*Explain conservation of mass.
*Describe examples of chemical changes.
*Compare and contrast chemical and physical changes.

Lesson 4: How Can You Tell When a New Substance Forms?

*Review online lesson
