Thursday April 27, 2017

Hi everyone,

Another great day in grade 4!

After our meditation we jumped right into our next poetry lesson on cinquian poems. We composed one together about Dominican and then students wrote one on Anne Frank and a third on the topic of their choice. Their favorite of these will be added to their Poetry Google Docs tonight. Later, in Math, we learned about Stem and Leaf Plots. Even though it was a little confusing at first the kids picked up on it and we had a great lesson. In Science we went over last night's homework on changing states of matter and then they worked on review in preparation for the upcoming unit test.

This afternoon we had our final and most exciting day of the Invention Convention 2017! Our class was incredibly triumphant and had the MOST WINNERS IN THE UPPER DIVISION! Katie was awarded third place and a year long membership at the Science Museum for her Splike invention. Fiona won second place for her Fantastic Dog Feeder and Marianne was the big winner for her Relaxer Holder. I also want to give honorable mention to Ayrton for his Self Made Popcorn as he had the busiest stall all day and was only one point away from placing for an award. I am beyond proud of each and every one of you. Thank you for your hard work and good attitude throughout this whole process.

Happy hump day everyone!

Happy birthday to our sweet Fiona! We hope you have a wonderful day. Thank you from all of us for the delicious cake this afternoon!

This morning after our meditation we did a grammar lesson, continuing our work with prepositions. During Science, we finished our lesson on states of water by doing an online interactive activity and following that students worked independently on a foldable assessment to demonstrate their learning.

This afternoon our students participated in their first ever Invention Convention! They were very supportive and respectful of each other during their presentations and I was proud of them as they showed off their creative ideas and "sold" them to the judges. Way to go! Tomorrow afternoon we will still be set up so parents are welcome to join in.

Tuesday April 25, 2017

Happy Tuesday everyone!

We have been having a great and productive day together. After our meditation I handed out extra assignment book pages and we got organized by writing down important dates and looking at what we need to finish by the end of May.
Afterwards I presented the students with our idiom of the day which we talked about and then moved on to our Poetry unit. It's nice that they are so excited about this unit! We reviewed figurative language and then I introduced today's poem type which were alphabet alliteration poems. We wrote a hilarious one together and then students had a fun time utilizing all of the vivid verbs and awesome adjectives posted around the classroom to create wild and crazy poems. We enjoyed sharing them with each other at the end of class.
During Science we moved on to our next lesson about states of water. In Math class we reviewed our mean, median, mode, and range knowledge as we moved on to line plots. In Social Studies we continued to talk about McCarthyism and the Red Scare. At the end of the day Fiona presented her Step into Biography History Project. What a cute Alexander Graham Bell she makes!
