Happy hump day everyone!

This morning after our meditation we learned and practiced some strategies for dividing up a story to write a concise summary of the beginning, middle, and end. Everyone worked together and participated and did a great job!

In Social Studies we talked about how the beginning of the end of the arms race and in Science we did an experiment to show how we can make a solution and then analyzed our results.

This is what was written on the board this morning:
James’ mom is having twins over his summer break so he is spending the holiday with his Uncle Romie and Aunt Nannette. He has never met them before so he feels concerned. Right away, James notices how different NYC is from his home. He also learns that Uncle Romie is a collage artist who has a big art show coming up, so he will be very busy working. Although James explores much of the city, he likes Harlem the best.

Good afternoon everyone,

Welcome to our third last week of school! I can't believe how quickly the time is passing. Let's make the most of our last few weeks together. Remember to stay well rested, be organized, and try your best! You've almost made it to summer vacation!

This morning after assembly Huan shared his wonderful five senses poems about the solar system. Afterwards, we learned about ancient tradition Japanese poems known as haiku's. We wrote a couple together to practice, and then students tried their best to write ones on their own in a timed period. Afterwards they split into partners to write together and then we came back and shared with one another.

In Math we learned how to read line graphs. In Science we talked about solutions and mixtures and did a few experiments to demonstrate our understanding.

Friday May 5, 2017

Happy Friday everyone!

This morning we began by learning how to write five senses poems. We had a pretty fun time writing one about Taiwan together. Afterwards, students blindly picked a topic out of a pile and for homework they will have to write two 5 senses poems about their chosen subject, one that has a negative theme, and one that has a positive theme.
In Math we reviewed what we have learned about double bar graphs and moved on to circle graphs. We talked about how circle graphs can be represented in fractions and how we can use those fractions to figure out the actual number they represent. It was a lot of information but they worked hard and were able to get it and actually aced their workbook practice!
During Social Studies we learned about the Vietnam War. Students were very interested and had a lot of thoughtful questions.
During last period we learned about the freedom of free verse poems. I set a timer for two, and then three minutes and students tried their best to write continuously the entire time. We had some really beautiful ideas come through!

HOMEWORK:

LANGUAGE:

On your poetry Google doc:

*Write 1 positive and 1 negative themed 5 senses poem for the topic you chose today in class. Be sure to follow the correct order. Be creative!

*Write a free verse poem about anything you like! Be creative and try to use unique adjectives and verbs to help your reader visualize what you are saying. Every time you start a new sentence, go to the next line.

*Please copy down the idiom of the day into your notebook. You only need to copy the idiom and its meaning, not the sentence.

A Taste of Your Own Medecine
*When you are mistreated the same way you mistreat others
Example: Amy is always playing jokes on her friends. Someone is going to give her a taste of her own medicine someday

*The idiom of the day is a toss up!*

Thursday May 4, 2017

Hi everyone,

This morning after our meditation we started reading a new Journeys story called Me and Uncle Romie. First we learned the vocabulary, made some predictions based on those words and then read it aloud together, stopping to discuss throughout. Afterwards, during Math, we learned how to make double bar graphs to compare sets of data. In Science, students wrote their Unit 7 tests, and for the most part, they did very well.

I have handed back the ITBS results along with a letter from the school. Our students did quite well, with the class testing at a grade 5.4 level. I am very proud of all of you! Please take a look and let me know if you have any questions.

Wednesday May 3, 2017

Hi everyone,

This morning after our meditation we learned about how adverbs can really change the meaning of a sentence. To demonstrate this the kids worked in pairs to fill in the blanks of a paragraph with adverbs. Afterwards, we all ready the paragraphs aloud and noticed how different the meanings were with the variety of adverbs chosen by each group. After library we started Unit 8 in Science, talking about physical changes in matter. The test has been rescheduled for tomorrow. I know how exhausted I was last night so I didn't expect the kids to stay up studying. I hope everyone got a good rest and studied over the past weekend so that tonight you can just review and sleep early. In Social Studies we talked about the Korean war. At the end of the day we learned how to write Creature Alliteration Poems. We had a pretty fun time writing all about our little Johnian creature. During ECA, students had a chance to either work on their grammar homework or get started on writing their own, individual, creature alliteration poem. Whichever they did not finish is for homework.

HOMEWORK:

SCIENCE:

*Unit 7 Test tomorrow

LANGUAGE:

Whichever one you didn't finish today is for homework:

*English workbook page 124-125

*Creature Alliteration Poem on your poetry Google doc. This is due Friday May 5.

Johnian
Johnian lives in jolly Japan
He eats Joshua and jaguar jelly joyfully
He just jumps on Jupiter jokingly
Johnian jokes about jalepenos and jokers
He jumped on Jesus' lap and then joined me at my job.
